The Rev. Canon Johncy Itty, PhD, of New York,
has been elected as Ninth Bishop of the Diocese of Oregon.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - May 17, 2003

The Right Rev. Robert L. Ladehoff, retiring Bishop of the Diocese of Oregon, announced the results of the Electing Convention held today at Trinity Cathedral in Portland, Oregon.

One hundred and thirty-six clergy and 224 lay delegates gathered to elect The Rev. Canon Johncy Itty, canon residentiary, Cathedral of Incarnation, Garden City, NY.  His consecration will take place on September 20, 2003, in Salem, Oregon.

Bishop-Elect Itty earned his undergraduate and master's degrees from Queens College CUNY in 1985 and 1986.  He received his PhD in political science and international relations from CUNY and Master of Divinity degree from New York Theological Seminary in 1994.  Itty was ordained to the priesthood in 1993.

As Bishop, Itty will lead 21,000 Oregon Episcopalians who attend 77 churches spread throughout western Oregon from the Columbia River on the north to the California border on the south and from the Cascade crest on the east to the Pacific Ocean.  The Bishop is the Ecclesiastical Authority of the Diocese.

The Episcopal Church of the United States traces its orgin to Christ and the Apostles, to the Church of England in the 2nd century and, in its modern form, from the English Reformation of the 16th century when royal supremacy was established and the authority of the papacy was repudiated.  The Diocese of Oregon is one of the eighteen dioceses in Province VIII of Episcopal Church.  There are nine provinces.  The Episcopal Church of the United States is part of the world wide Anglican Communion."
